This is going to be a little different than my usual posts… I’ll explain why in a bit. But Quidditch world, meet the duo to look out for from one of the most underrated teams in the sport: Brady Groves and Matt Williams of the Utah Crimson Fliers.
Utah is an amazing team, and their success thus far has a lot to do with my first featured player, George Williams. George was a brilliant leader on the pitch, and his ability to really evaluate the field and get the Quaffle to whatever player had an opening that they could utilize their skill set to take advantage of greatly affected Utah’s scoring strategy. Unfortunately, George is away on a mission… which majorly bums me out because I thoroughly enjoyed the confusion I felt whenever I watched him and his twin brother Matt on the field at the same time and tried figuring out how this kid kept teleporting and switching headbands.
Utah’s main scoring strategy up until now revolved around George, Matt and Brady, who I’ve been told were known as “Murderer’s Row”. This cracks me up because the first time I watched the trio play together, I was reminded of (forgive the awful movie reference) Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane, respectively. They’re all good players individually, but it’s when they’re working together that they all become really formidable. George is sort of the man in charge who gets the ball where it has to go and acts on openings for himself whenever it was advantageous. Matt is this slick, speedy Chaser who effortlessly weaves through the field and is very skilled at blocking bludgers. When all that’s left is a beater to get past, Matt gets the ball and takes it in for a goal. Brady’s the guy you give the ball to when the beaters are distracted - while he’s got some work to do at blocking bludgers, he can plow through defensive Chasers and the Keeper like it’s nothing. He’s not even that huge, but he’s wicked hard to take down, especially once he’s built up some momentum. Brady’s also pretty good at taking long shots for the times he doesn’t feel like getting past the defense. So with Matt’s speed and Brady’s strength, Utah still has an extremely solid scoring squad that you really have to take time to prepare for. Matt and Brady know each other’s skills very well and they work as one… not enough can be said about how important that is in Quidditch.
WEAKNESS: This really depends on them, but Leadership. With George gone, someone really has to step up and guide the duo, so the right person is used in the right scenario. They both have different weaknesses, but if you play them to their strengths, they can be unstoppable.
I would just like to point out that I’m playing for the Crimson Fliers at Western Cup, and hope to complete the Trio that is Murderer’s Row. Man…I can’t wait until March!
EDIT: George and Matt aren’t twins. Matt is about 3 years older.
